EN TWC #058: Let’s talk about sex: Effects of the menopause on sexuality and partnership

Dear MHI reader

Today we would like to address an often underestimated topic: the effects of the menopause on sexuality and relationships. The menopause brings with it many changes that are both physical and emotional in nature. These changes can also affect your love life. But don’t worry, there are many ways to deal with them and even discover new opportunities.

Libido changes

Many women experience a decline in sexual desire during the menopause. This is often due to falling oestrogen levels. However, not all women are affected by this; some even report an increase in desire as the fear of an unwanted pregnancy disappears. The causes of libido fluctuations are very individual and also depend on the respective relationship situation.

Physical changes

A drop in oestrogen levels can lead to vaginal dryness and pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia). These changes can significantly impair the desire to have sex.

Psychological factors

The menopause can also have psychological effects. Insecurities about your own body image, fears about the ageing process and worries about the future can reduce your desire for sex.

Ok, so how can I revive my sexual desire during the menopause?

There are various ways to revive sexual desire during the menopause:

Open communication with the partner

Trusting and open communication about needs, fears and desires is essential. Couples should talk openly about changes and new preferences without feeling ashamed. This creates an atmosphere of trust and intimacy. Indeed, understanding can even grow for each other and strengthen the partnership.

Try something new

The menopause can be an opportunity to rediscover sexuality. New practices, toys or watching sex films together can increase desire and bring a breath of fresh air into your love life. A playful approach can help to break down inhibitions and gain new experiences.

Sex dates

Sex appointments integrated into everyday life can help to reduce the pressure of spontaneity and create space for closeness and intimacy. These fixed dates can increase anticipation and help both partners find time for their relationship.

Hormone therapy and aids

For physical complaints such as vaginal dryness, hormone therapy, lubricants or moisturizers can provide relief and promote sexual pleasure. These aids can significantly improve sexual well-being.

Healthy lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, relaxation techniques and a balanced diet can have a positive effect on sexual desire. Physical well-being and a positive attitude towards your own body contribute significantly to sexual health.

Acceptance of the changes

A positive attitude towards the physical changes during the menopause is important in order not to lose your desire. Self-esteem and attractiveness are closely linked. Acceptance and self-love are crucial in order to perceive your own body image positively and maintain sexual pleasure.

With openness, creativity and mutual understanding, sexual desire can be revived and love life can be redesigned. A fulfilling sexuality during the menopause is possible – with the right attitude and communication. Stay curious and open to new experiences.
