Snoring: Why It Gets Worse After 50, and What Helps

Snoring is often treated like a joke, but for many women, it becomes a real issue during midlife.

If snoring has appeared or worsened after 50, hormonal changes may be part of the reason.

And while it can disturb sleep for partners, it can also affect your own sleep quality and overall health.

Why Snoring Becomes More Common With Age

As we get older, muscles throughout the body naturally lose tone, including the muscles in the throat and airways.

During menopause, declining oestrogen and progesterone may also affect breathing stability during sleep. This can make the airways more likely to narrow or vibrate, leading to snoring.

Weight changes, poor sleep, alcohol, and nasal congestion can further increase the problem.

Why It Should Not Be Ignored

Occasional snoring is common, but loud or persistent snoring can sometimes be linked to sleep apnoea, a condition where breathing briefly stops during sleep.

Signs such as waking exhausted, morning headaches, or daytime fatigue may suggest that sleep quality is being affected more seriously.

The Good News: Small Changes Can Help

Improving sleep habits can make a meaningful difference.

Sleeping on your side, reducing alcohol before bed, maintaining a healthy weight, and treating nasal congestion may all help reduce snoring.

In some cases, medical evaluation may be useful, especially if symptoms suggest sleep apnoea.

Most importantly, restful sleep matters. And addressing snoring can improve both your nights and your overall wellbeing.
