The nature of memory and forgetting
Memory is a complex process that involves storing and retrieving information. Occasional forgetfulness is perfectly normal, but if it starts to interfere with your daily life, it’s important to understand the causes.
Common causes of memory lapses
1. Stress and anxiety
High levels of stress can impair concentration and memory. When your mind is preoccupied with worries, it is difficult to concentrate on tasks, which can lead to forgetfulness.
2. Lack of sleep
Getting enough sleep is important for memory formation.
Too little sleep can impair the brain’s ability to store and retrieve information.
3. Hormonal changes
Menopause can cause hormonal fluctuations that affect cognitive function, which can lead to memory problems. Our ovaries and our brain are connected. The drop in oestrogen production has an impact on the hypothalamus and hippocampus. It takes time for our brains to adjust to these changes, but we know that this “brain fog” associated with menopause does not last forever. Once the situation stabilises, cognitive functions return to normal.
4. Medication
Certain medications can have side effects that affect memory. If you notice cognitive changes, you should discuss any medications you are taking with a doctor.
5. Nutrient deficiencies
A lack of vitamins, especially vitamin B12, can lead to memory problems. A balanced diet can help maintain cognitive health.
An important tip
Forgetfulness can be frustrating, but it is often a normal response to stress, fatigue or changes in life. With simple habits such as exercise, a healthy diet and socialising, you can support your memory and feel more like yourself again. Be patient with your mind. It is doing its best.
