When you think about testosterone, you probably picture it as a male hormone. But did you know that women need it too?
In fact, testosterone plays a vital role in women’s energy levels, mood, muscle strength, and sex drive, and it naturally declines with age and menopause.
What Does Low Testosterone Feel Like?
Many women with low testosterone feel tired all the time, even after a good night’s sleep.
Others may notice a drop in their libido, difficulty building or keeping muscle, mood swings, or a general feeling of not being themselves. Because these symptoms overlap with other hormonal changes during menopause, low testosterone is often overlooked.
Testosterone levels in women begin to drop from the age of 30, but the decline can become more noticeable during and after menopause.
Unlike oestrogen and progesterone, testosterone replacement is less commonly discussed—but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important.

If you suspect low testosterone, a doctor can order a blood test to check your hormone levels. They’ll also consider your symptoms and health history to decide if treatment is appropriate.
Testosterone therapy may be an option, but it’s still used cautiously in women.
Sometimes, lifestyle changes like strength training, reducing stress, and eating a balanced diet can help restore balance naturally.
If testosterone is very low, your doctor may consider a small dose of hormone therapy, often alongside oestrogen or progesterone, to ease symptoms.
