Hair Loss During Menopause: Are Hormones to Blame?

Dear MHI reader,

Losing more hair than usual? Noticing thinning patches or a wider part? You’re not alone. Many women experience hair loss or thinning during menopause, and hormones could be the root cause.

Why Hair Loss Happens During Menopause

Oestrogen and progesterone play key roles in keeping your hair healthy and full.

These hormones help your hair stay in its growth phase for longer, which is why hair tends to look thicker and fuller in younger years.

But during menopause, when these hormones drop, hair shifts more quickly into the shedding phase. This can lead to noticeable thinning or even bald spots, especially along the top or front of the scalp.

On top of that, the balance between oestrogen and testosterone can change. When oestrogen drops, testosterone becomes more dominant, which may increase hair loss in areas where men typically experience balding.

What You Can Do About It

Hair loss during menopause is common, but it can feel emotionally difficult.

The first step is to rule out other causes, such as thyroid disorders, iron deficiency, or extreme stress. Once hormonal hair loss is confirmed, you can explore treatments.

Over-the-counter products like minoxidil (topical sprays) may help with regrowth.

Some women benefit from hormone therapy, especially if hair loss is paired with other menopausal symptoms.

Diet also matters; a balanced intake of protein, iron, zinc, and biotin can support healthy hair.

Gentle hair care, less heat styling, and avoiding harsh chemicals also make a big difference.

You Are Still Beautiful — Hair or Not

Hair loss can be upsetting, but it doesn’t define your beauty or strength. With the right care and support, many women see improvement. And remember, how you feel matters just as much as how you look. So be kind to yourself during this time of change.
