#156: Losing Weight During Menopause: What Does Your Body Need?

Losing Weight During Menopause: What Does Your Body Need?

This is one of the most frustrating changes many women experience, but rarely fully understand.

If losing weight has suddenly become harder during perimenopause or menopause, you are not alone. And more importantly, it is not simply about eating less or trying harder.

Weight changes during this time are common, and in most cases, they are linked to real shifts in how your body works.

Why Weight Loss Becomes More Difficult During Menopause

As oestrogen levels decline, the body begins to change how it stores and uses energy. Fat distribution often shifts, with more fat stored around the abdomen.

At the same time, muscle mass naturally decreases with age, which slows down metabolism. This means the body burns fewer calories at rest, even if eating habits have not changed.

Hormonal changes can also affect appetite, blood sugar balance, and how full you feel after meals, making weight management feel more challenging.

It Is Not Just About Food

Weight changes during menopause are not only caused by diet.

Sleep disturbances, stress, and reduced physical activity all play a role.

Poor sleep can increase hunger hormones, while stress can influence cravings and eating patterns.

This is why focusing only on calorie restriction often leads to frustration rather than results.

The Good News: There Is a Better Approach

This is not about extreme dieting. Supporting your body during menopause means working with it, not against it.

A balanced approach that includes regular meals, enough protein, strength-building activities, and good sleep can help support metabolism and energy use more effectively.

Small, consistent habits tend to work far better than strict or short-term plans.
