#104: A More Relaxed Menopause with the Help of Scents

A More Relaxed Menopause with the Help of Scents

Dear MHI Reader,

Menopause brings a rollercoaster of changes – hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and increased stress. But did you know that something as simple as scent could help you feel more balanced? Aromatherapy – using essential oils to support relaxation and well-being – can be a natural way to ease menopause symptoms.

How Scents Can Help

Your sense of smell is directly linked to the brain’s limbic system, which controls emotions, stress, and hormone responses. Certain scents can trigger relaxation, improve sleep, and even help with mood swings.

Best Scents for Menopause Relief

  1. Lavender – For Stress & Sleep

Feeling restless or anxious? Lavender is known for its calming effect. A few drops on your pillow or in a diffuser can help you sleep better and feel more at ease.

  1. Peppermint – For Hot Flashes

If hot flashes hit out of nowhere, peppermint oil might be your new best friend. It has a cooling effect – try dabbing a diluted drop on your wrists or using a peppermint cooling spray.

  1. Clary Sage – For Hormonal Balance

Clary sage is popular for managing mood swings and hormonal imbalances. It may also help with night sweats. Diffuse it in the evening or add a few drops to a warm bath.

  1. Citrus Oils (Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit) – For Energy & Mood

Menopause fatigue is real! Uplifting citrus scents can boost your energy and improve focus. A quick sniff of lemon or orange essential oil can help you feel more refreshed.

  1. Chamomile – For Relaxation & Irritability

If menopause has you feeling irritable, chamomile can help calm your nerves. Try it in a tea, diffuser, or even a body lotion before.

How to Use Scents for Menopause Relief

PMS symptoms may not worsen, but they often present differently. Many women experience shifts in timing, with symptoms starting earlier or lasting longer than before.

  • Diffuser – Add a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser and let the scent fill your space.
  • Roll-On Blend – Mix essential oils with a carrier oil (like coconut or almond oil) and apply to your wrists or temples.
  • Aromatherapy Bath – Add a few drops of your favourite calming oil to warm bathwater.
  • Spritz & Inhale – Mix essential oils with water in a spray bottle for a refreshing mist.

Take a Deep Breath & Relax

Menopause doesn’t have to be all stress and discomfort. With the right scents, you can create a calming environment, ease symptoms, and feel more in control of your journey.
