Meno Health. Clinical Evidence.

Nationwide survey on menopause in the workplace

As part of the MenoSupport Switzerland research project, the personal experiences of women going through menopause in the workplace are being studied. The aim of the study is to assess the impact of menopause on work performance and career choices. The data collected helps Swiss companies develop appropriate measures for managing the health of menopausal women in the workplace.

Three partners have joined forces for this project: the Berlin School of Economics and Law, the Menopause Center at Inselspital in Bern, and the company The Women Circle . Together, they are replicating in Switzerland the survey on menopause and its impact on work that was previously conducted in Germany as part of the MenoSupport project.

PROJECT DURATION

01.04.2025 – 30.06.2025

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Many working women experience symptoms related to menopause. Hormonal changes leading up to menopause (which typically begins in a woman’s early 50s) often start as early as age 40, during what is known as perimenopause. The symptoms experienced by those affected are numerous. They include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, loss of concentration, and mood swings.

Studies conducted in Germany, Austria, and Great Britain show that menopausal symptoms can have a significant impact on women’s career decisions. Unfortunately, many affected women do not speak about their symptoms for fear of being stigmatized and disadvantaged at work.

Although menopausal women represent a significant portion of the workforce in many companies and constitute valuable human capital thanks to their professional experience and expertise, Switzerland lacks support services for workplace health promotion during this phase of hormonal change.
