Meno Health. Clinical Evidence.

Switzerland-wide survey on the topic of menopause in the workplace

As part of the MenoSupport Suisse research project, the personal experiences of women going through the menopause in a working context are being investigated. The aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of the menopause on work ability and career decisions. The data collected will help Swiss companies to develop suitable measures for the occupational health management of menopausal women in the workplace.

The research team from the Berlin School of Economics and Law and the Menopause Center at Inselspital Bern is replicating the survey on menopause in the work context from Germany, which was developed in the MenoSupport project, in Switzerland with project partners from The Women Circle .

PROBLEM DEFINITION

Many working women are confronted with menopausal symptoms. The hormonal changes before the onset of the menopause (usually in the early 50s) often begin in the early 40s in the so-called perimenopause. Symptoms of those affected range from hot flushes and sleep disorders to poor concentration and mood swings. Studies from Germany, Austria and the UK show that menopausal symptoms can have a significant impact on women's career decisions. However, many affected women do not talk about their symptoms for fear of stigmatization and discrimination in the workplace.

Although menopausal women make up a significant proportion of the workforce in many companies and represent valuable human capital with their professional experience and expertise, there is a lack of support services for workplace health promotion for this phase of hormonal change in Switzerland.
