Switzerland-wide survey on menopause in the workplace

The MenoSupport Suisse research project examines the personal experiences of women going through menopause in the workplace. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of menopause on work ability and career decisions. The collected data will support Swiss companies in developing appropriate measures for occupational health management of women going through menopause in the workplace.

The research team from the Berlin School of Economics and Law and the Menopause Center of the Inselspital Bern replicated in Switzerland with project partners from The Women Circle the survey on menopause in the work context from Germany, which was developed in the MenoSupport project.

PROJECT DURATION

01.04.2025 - 15.07.2025

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Many working women face symptoms related to menopause. The hormonal changes that precede the onset of menopause (usually in the early 50s) often begin in the early 40s during the so-called perimenopause. Symptoms range from hot flashes and sleep disturbances to difficulty concentrating and mood swings. Studies from Germany, Austria, and Great Britain show that menopausal symptoms can have a significant impact on women's career decisions. However, many affected women do not discuss their symptoms for fear of stigmatization and discrimination in the workplace.

Although women in menopause make up a significant portion of the workforce in many companies and represent valuable human capital with their professional experience and expertise, there is a lack of support services for workplace health promotion during this phase of hormonal change in Switzerland.
