Dry eyes

What is the problem?

The tear film covers and lubricates the surface of our eyes. This consists of a complex mixture of water, oil and mucus and keeps the eyes moist. If the tear film is missing, symptoms such as tingling, blurred vision, burning, foreign body sensation and irritation occur.

Dry eyes are a common symptom of ageing, but can worsen during the menopause. This is due to the decline in estrogens and androgens. It's not the most common or unpleasant symptom of the menopause, but it's still worth understanding the causes and trying to do something about it.

What are the reasons for this?

The decrease in oestrogen leads to a reduction in collagen and elastin and causes a general dryness phenomenon. This can occur vaginally, on the skin and also in the eyes. The production of the lacrimal glands is affected by the decline in oestrogen.

What solutions are available?

Avoid air-conditioned rooms, sun and draughts. In your car, do not point the ventilation directly at your face. You can gently massage your eyelids to reactivate the meibomian glands.

From a humidity level of 60%, the eyes no longer dry out so quickly. To increase the humidity, you can place a container of water or humidifier in the room. Don't forget to drink enough, preferably two liters a day (water or tea). There are also moisturizing eye care products that are neither preserved nor phosphated and work very well.
