Loss of self-confidence
What is the problem?
The loss of self-confidence during the menopausal transition is a phenomenon frequently observed by therapists. Some women experience a sense of loss of identity and loss of femininity. It is important to talk about this and find solutions, because withdrawing from social life and feeling isolated as a result is not an option.
What are the reasons for this?
Loss of self-confidence is not a direct symptom of the menopause, but rather the result of several. Anxiety, mood swings and lack of concentration can be the trigger. Changes in physical appearance and the effects of ageing cannot be accepted by many women. The menopause also means the end of fertility and accepting that you can no longer have children. This is a (conscious or unconscious) necessary and sometimes difficult process.
Fatigue and hot flushes can also hinder your social life, which can also affect your self-confidence and well-being.
What solutions are available?
The first question you should ask yourself is whether the feeling of lack of self-confidence is due to physical symptoms (hot flushes, weight gain, ageing skin) or rather psychological symptoms (irritability, anxiety).
In both cases, physical and sporting activity has a very positive influence on self-esteem. However, an essential prerequisite is that this activity is adapted to the level of those practicing it. Sport in a group can create a sense of belonging and your integration into the sports group offers you space for exchange.
Take stock of what you can do (well). This will help you realize that your qualities are still there, whether you are working or not. You can also try to make a list of all the activities you are proud of. These activities can take place in different environments, both professional and private.
Hobbies and an active social life are also important. Taking up a new personal, voluntary, artistic or club activity also helps to tackle the feeling of no longer being needed and to enjoy what you do.
