Check your symptoms

Menopause can be a challenging time in your life, and it's not uncommon to wonder if the symptoms you're experiencing are normal or indicative of something more serious. Here's how to recognize the symptoms of menopause.

Symptoms of menopause: what are they and how do you recognize them?

Menopause is a natural phase in every woman's life that usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. During this time, your body produces less oestrogen and progesterone, which can lead to a variety of physical and emotional changes. Some women may notice the first signs as early as their 30s or 40s.

An important first step is to find out about the symptoms of menopause.

The symptoms of menopause vary from woman to woman, but the most common include

  • Hot flushes: A sudden feeling of heat, often accompanied by sweating and a rapid heartbeat. It affects around 75% of women during menopause.
  • Night sweats: Sweating during the night that causes you to wake up frequently. 61% of menopausal women experience this.
  • Sleep disorders: Difficulty falling asleep and / or sleeping through the night. Almost 40% of menopausal women have sleep disorders.
  • Mood swings: From irritability to depression. 25-40% of menopausal women experience mood swings.
  • Joint pain: pain and stiffness in the joints. Around a third of menopausal women experience this.
  • Forgetfulness and concentration difficulties: Difficulty remembering things and concentrating, also known as 'brain fog'. Around 60% of menopausal women experience forgetfulness.

Mindfulness - Discover inner peace

As a second step, you can write down your symptoms in a diary to determine which symptoms you experience and how often you experience them. This can help you to better understand how your body reacts to the changes associated with menopause.
